Save that seat for me, please?

You worked as hard as your friend, maybe even more, got a better ranking/ percentage but he was the one selected simply because he had a certificate with sc/st written on it, it hurts doesn’t it?

In the next 5 years I don’t think we will have an option called a general category because our country has such a great reservation system to help the “needy” to stand on their feet. Our constitution reads that everyone is equal and should be given equal rights but today being a normal Indian guy is probably the most disadvantaged person you can be when it comes to college admissions. I don’t think having reservation is wrong, but having reservation for the stupid lot of the society is wrong. It is like officially declaring that so and so caste, community, religion or gender is born without a brain and thus would need special quota to survive in this world.

The government beautifully justifies it by using the words ‘socially backward’ as if these set of people have to face discrimination and hatred everyday of their lives ( maybe their rich friends didn’t like the colour of BMW they bought).

Now you might say that Christians and Muslims are a minority. And they need social upliftment in order for the particular religion to survive.
A) India is the largest secular nation in the world and no amount of hinduvta or any government propaganda can change that. (Eg Indira Gandhi tried but failed and do I even say anything about godhra riots)
B) You already have separate institutions which are open JUST for a particular religion. Just leave a message and I will tell you where you can apply considering your religion.

As for women who may not be encouraged to take up education, again, we already have women only colleges and yes they are of quality so please don’t save them seats in co ed ones as if you are on a metro. It does not make them any safer, but only projects them as a weaker section of the society.

It’s simple. Have reservation for those who actually have a disadvantage, those who do not have the facility of attending school and coaching and on top of that personal tuitions only to get a -25 in JEE MAINS. Have reservation for ‘economically backward’ class and ‘physically challenged’ (one of which had to top for three years to be noticed by the way) and that is it.

We cannot expect equality in every citizen’s mind unless the nation provides equal opportunity to them.

  1. A very nice post, I have similar thoughts and specially here in India the situation is terrible! Gosh! Certainly, merit should be the sole basis for admissions. It’s very very unfair! I guess I too am not getting my admission! -_-
You’ve covered the issue so well in so few words, brilliant!
